Infant Toddler

The first years of a child's life are the most important. Giving the right help to infants and toddlers can make a difference which lasts a lifetime. Harvey County families with infants or toddlers (from birth to age 3) who have developmental delays or disabilities are eligible for early intervention services at no cost.

The Harvey County Infant Toddler Team uses a primary service provider model which supports each family through interest based learning opportunities. This evidence-based approach emphasizes the powerful learning opportunities that happen as part of children's participation in everyday family and community life.

How it works:

Our team works together with each family to identify and use everyday activities as the primary sources for children to learn and build their skills and abilities.
Families learn to use their children's interests and abilities as the basis for intervention in a rich variety of everyday family, community and/or early childhood settings and activities.
Interest-based activities become the source of children's learning and development.
Families learn specific strategies for supporting their children's participation in and learning through everyday activities.
Children receive increased chances to practice existing abilities and learn new skills.

Infant Toddler Purpose

The purpose of the Infant Toddler Program is to:

*provide support and resources to family members and caregivers about their child's development

*encourage families to improve their children's learning and development through everyday activities

*provide materials, information and resources to families and their children

*access needed people to form a team of support for families

*assist families as they strengthen interactions with their children

*focus on outcomes important to the family

Qualification Process

Steps for Qualifying for the Infant Toddler Program:

1. INTAKE: A family service coordinator visits your home to gather information about your concerns for your child. If you choose to go on to evaluation, you will sign consent forms at that time.

2. EVALUATION: A team will come to your home to gather information on the skills your child uses during daily activities and routines. The team will include an early childhood special education teacher, a speech pathologist and a motor specialist.

3. IFSP: If your child is eligible for the Infant Toddler Program, an Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP) will be written. This document is written based on your family's resources, priorities, and concerns. It lists your primary provider, outcomes and services.

4. TRANSITION: 90 days before your child's 3rd birthday, your family service coordinator and the transition coordinator will begin to talk with your about options for child when he/she turns 3.

Primary Provider Model

The Infant Toddler team uses the primary provider model when working with families. This means all team members work closely with your family to conduct the assessment and design your child's plan. However, your family will see on primary person who will support your family your family in the daily routines and activities important to your family. Building a relationship with one person on the Infant Toddler allows us to provide your family better support. Your primary provider will in other team members as needed.
